How much, and how deep.
The commonest error is ordering enough soil to cover an area but not enough to give roots any depth. Grass will survive in 100mm and be miserable in it; beds and shrubs want considerably more.

The things people ask before booking.
For a lawn, 100 to 150mm once settled. For beds and shrubs, 300mm or more, because that is where the roots actually live. Skimping on depth is the usual reason new turf struggles, and it is much cheaper to solve before the soil is spread than after.
That the soil has been passed through a screen to take out stones, roots and debris, so what arrives is consistent and workable. Unscreened soil is often just site spoil, and while it is cheaper you will spend the difference picking stones out of it.
Roughly 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre. Multiply your area by the depth you want and allow for settlement, because loose soil consolidates noticeably once it is spread and watered. Send us the dimensions and we will check it.
It depends on what is there. Over compacted subsoil or builders' rubble, soil alone will not save you: the ground underneath needs breaking up or drainage sorting first, or you have built a very expensive puddle.
Loose is much cheaper per tonne for anything of size. Bulk bags are worth the premium for a rear garden with no vehicle access, because they can be placed close to the work rather than tipped on the drive and barrowed twice.
